1 Pipelines are considered as lifeline structures and are mainly used for transporting commodities over long distances. Since they traverse over a large geographical area, they may get damaged during earthquakes disrupting the supply of material, leakage of product, the breakout of fire, etc., which can lead to significant financial and environmental impact. A large part of the land area of India is prone to moderate to severe earthquake shaking, and pipelines built in these areas may encounter various seismic hazards en route. Therefore, the seismic design of the pipeline has great importance in the field of lifeline engineering.
2 The pipelines are usually buried below ground for economic, aesthetic, safety, and environmental reasons. These are normally termed buried pipelines. In certain circumstances, it may also be required to take the pipelines above ground, which are termed as above-ground pipelines. This standard provides guidance to design both buried and above-ground pipelines subjected to various seismic hazards.
