The standard was originally published in 1986. This first revision has been brought out to bring the standard in line with the international practices and in the latest style and format of the Indian Standards.

a) A new clause 2 on references has been added;
b) A new clause 3 on terminology has been added defining wire, rod and non-sag or doped tungsten wire;
c) Clause 5 on chemical composition has been modified to limit the maximum composition of other element excluding iron and molybdenum to 100 ppm Max; maximum cap of 500 ppm has been kept on total elements/impurities other than tungsten which is determined by difference ;
d) Name of the clause 8 on requirement has been changed to mechanical requirement and clause 8.5 on Straightness has been modified by separating the test method from the clause and mentioning it separately in Annex D .The circular chord method has been added in Annex D for testing straightness of wires having diameter equal to more than 100 μm;
e) Clause 9.2 on out-of-roundness has been modified and the standard now requires it to be performed for wire or rod over 0.51 mm in diameter only;
3
f) Clause 9.3 on Mass/Diameter Conversion Formulas has been modified and the standard now prescribes the cutting and weighing methods for measurement of wire diameters below or equal to 0.51 mm as compared to earlier version which specified 0.76 mm or below;
g) Clause 10.3 on coiling and spooling has been modified to change the minimum length of wire in spool for wire sizes over 100 mg/ 200 mm from 50 meters to 50 grams;
h) Annex A which prescribes the sag determination test has been modified to include determination of sag properties of wires diameter 0.76 mm or over as compared to the earlier version of standard in which only sag determination of 0.76 mm tungsten wires were covered; the more number of test lengths and test weights as per the wire diameter are included testing weight, vertical displacement measurement of test specimen ,power supply to the test specimen, different exposed length for different diameter wire of formed test specimen; and
j) Annex D has been modified to
