Zinc and Zinc alloy wires are primarily used for thermal spraying on iron and steel parts for protection against atmospheric and galvanic corrosion. Thermal spraying is also employed for building-up worn metal surfaces. Zinc and Zinc alloy wires are also sprayed on capacitor element ends for conductivity and solderability purpose. This standard covers the requirements for Zinc and zinc alloy wires, intended for use in flame and electric arc thermal spraying equipment for thermal spraying (Metallizing).

In the current revision, the following major modifications have been made:
a) The title of the standard has modified from ‘Specification for Zinc Wire for sprayed zinc coatings’ to ‘Specification For Zinc And Zinc Alloy Wire For Thermal Spraying (Metallizing)’ in order to cover the requirements of zinc alloys which are also used for coating purposes;
b) Scope has also been modified to include the zinc alloys intended for use in flame and electric arc thermal spraying equipment.
c) Clause 2 on References has been included;
4
d) Clause 3 on terminology has been modified to include the a new definition on wire rod; the definitions of wire bar/billet has been modified to include any cross-section as compared to the earlier definition which covered only circular cross-section; the definition of wire has been modified and defined as product reduced by drawing from wire rod as compared to earlier version which mentioned cold drawing from wire bar;
e) Clause 5 on Material and Manufacture has been modified , which now refers to Grade Zn99.995 of IS 209 for ingots to be used in manufacture of Zinc and Zinc alloy wires; also the manufacturing process for wire bar/ billet has now been added in this revision;
f) Clause 6 on chemical composition of wires has been modified and the Grade Zn99.95 has been removed as it was no longer being used and replaced by Grade Zn 99.995; three new grades of Zinc-Aluminium alloys namely ZnAl (98/2), ZnAl (87/13) and ZnAl (85/15) and any other alloys as agreed between the purchaser a
5
h) Diameter and Tolerance thereof have been modified and no negative tolerance is acceptable on wire diameters;
j) Clause 9.2 on wrapping test has been modified and the number of wraps and diameter of the mandrel used for wrapping test to be as agreed between the purchaser and supplier; and
k) Clause 10 on packing has been modified to include other types of packing as well namely spool packing drum packing and other special packings as agreed between the purchaser and the supplier;
