Synosis Points
1
The provisions of this Subsection (Part 6/Subsection 6B) are largely based on IS 11384 : 2022 ‘Composite Construction in Structural Steel and Concrete - Code of Practice (first revision)’. Since composite construction in steel and concrete has come a long way in India including the use of newer grades of steel and higher strengths of concrete, the revision of IS 11384 was done. The major changes in the revision of IS 11384 included provisions for the design of most of the members and components of composite construction, based on the limit states method.
2
It specifically addresses two types of composite columns—concrete-encased steel columns, which may be either fully or partially encased, and concrete-filled steel columns— both of which enhance load-bearing capacity and fire resistance. For composite slabs, the Subsection includes two types: profiled sheeting, which serves as formwork for reinforced concrete, and embossed profile sheeting, which functions as both formwork and tension reinforcement, with or without shear connectors. It also provides guidelines for the design and testing of shear connectors to ensure efficient load transfer.
3
Serviceability limit states regulate deflection, vibration, and fire performance. Additionally, the Subsection includes specifications for light gauge steel and lightweight concrete, broadening the scope of composite construction applications. This Subsection is restricted to the design of steel
concrete composite components and systems used in buildings.
