| 1 | Pump performance is greatly influenced by intake flow conditions. Swirls and air-entraining vortices cause noise, vibration, cavitation damage, suction losses, and reduced efficiency. High swirl intensities increase frictional losses, lowering the available Net Positive Suction Head (NPSH). In vertical turbine pumps, pre-rotation at the impeller inlet—especially when close to the sump bottom—can cause shock losses, off-duty operation, and worsened cavitation characteristics. Site constraints also impact configuration. This standard was first published in 2003, and this revision has been brought out to bring the standard in the latest style and format of the Indian Standards. Further, the document has been reviewed to incorporate technological advancements and to make necessary editorial corrections. | |
