Earlier, the power of an agricultural tractor was declared by different manufactures in a different manner. Mostly, the engine power was declared with SAE or DIN rating. Though the engine is the source of power in a tractor but the user utilizes the power through its various outlets, such as power take-off (PTO), drawbar and belt pulley.

With a view to ensuring uniform practice for declaration of power of an agricultural tractor, this standard was first published in 1982. Subsequently the standard was revised in 1987, wherein provision was made for declaration of only power take-off (PTO) power along with specific fuel consumption.

The second revision of the standard incorporates the following modifications: a) The scope of the standard has been widened to include forestry tractors as well and the title of the standard has been modified accordingly. b) Requirement for location of labelling plate has been modified. c) Requirement of mentioning month of manufacture of tractor along with year in labelling plate has been provided.
