| 1 | Aniline is an important organic chemical used in the manufacture of dyes, medicines, resins, varnishes, perfumes, shoe polishes, etc., in vulcanizing rubber and as a solvent. It is highly toxic and is flammable. Intoxication may occur from inhalation, ingestion or by absorption through direct skin contact. The most common modes of accidental poisoning are spillage of the liquid on the skin or clothing leading to direct skin contact or the prolonged inhalation of vapour under circumstances of inadequate ventilation. The threshold limit in air by volume is 2 ppm, but the odour of aniline can usually be detected in concentrations of 0.5 ppm, thus providing a good warning margin. Observance of this code safety will reduce the frequency of hazard. Aniline is chemically also known as amino benzene or phenyl amine. Commercially it is known as aniline oil because of its oily appearance. | |
| 2 | This standard was originally published in 1974. The Committee felt a need to revise this standard with a view to update the standard based on the experience of last five decades and on the currently available data. | |
