Sl.No. Synosis Points
1 This standard prescribes the detailed procedure for measurement of gross beta activity in water samples such as drinking water, ground water, surface water, waste water, etc, geological samples such as soils, rocks, ores, sediments, etc, and biological samples such as blood, food, tissue, etc, that may be contaminated with beta emitters originating from natural or anthropogenic sources.
2 In this revision, a plastic scintillator-based low background beta counting system has been introduced due to its low background, and higher efficiency. Additionally, for the calibration of gross beta measuring equipment, a standard source of ⁹⁰Sr-⁹⁰Y has been incorporated alongside the ⁴⁰K source. For acidic samples, a stainless steel (SS) planchet has been used. In the case of water samples having gross beta activity greater than 1 Bq/L, a method for measuring total potassium is prescribed, which can then be used to estimate its contribution to the total beta activity. For geological samples, the requirement for sample weight has been revised to range from 10-50 grams.
