Planning to buy a Water Pump? Here’s what you should know

India has always been facing troublesome water issues, both in rural and urban areas. With World Water Day around the corner, our Standard IS 8472 on Water Pump can help you make the smart buying decisions.

Over the years, water pumps have proved to be an integral part of residential setups. Thanks to these powerful and efficient water pumps, moving water from ground levels to top floors of high-rise buildings that too without any major manual interference, has become possible.

The use of water pumps to extract water from underground sources and transferring it to overhead tanks is increasing in rural and urban areas. Buying an efficient water pump can not only help you gain greater efficiency and performance but also save energy and reduce costs.

Here’s what you should check before buying a water pump: –

  • Rate of flow – Also referred to as discharge, it denotes the usable volume of fluid distributed by a water pump in time unit. The flow rate is usually denoted using the letter “Q” and measured in meter cube per second (m3/s).

  • Power– The power transferred to the fluid by the machine increases the fluid’s energy per unit volume. Power depends on the fluid elements in the pump and the conversion of mechanical energy of the pump mechanism. Power is expressed in Kilo-Watt (KW).

  • Efficiency – Efficiency of a pump is the ratio between power supplied and power absorbed by the pump. A water pump with high efficiency will result in high water output with low power consumption.

  • Maximum head lift–The maximum head lift of a water pump refers to the longest distance (in terms of height) till which the machine will be able to pump water. You should opt for a pump that has a higher maximum head lift than the height that you intend to pump water to.

  • Static Suction lift–The static suction lift, in relation to a water pump, refers to the vertical distance from the water source to the pump. This factor is significant especially when draining a deep reservoir.

Buying an ISI certified water pump

With the various options for water pumps available in the market today, making the right choice can be confusing indeed. BIS standards can help you make a wise choice for energy-saving and cost-cutting with providing greater efficiency and reliable performance. So, to get the best value for your money, invest in an ISI certified water pump only. An ISI certification is the guarantee that a product adheres to the set standards for quality, efficiency and safe usage.

The standard set by the Bureau of Indian Standards for water pumps is IS 8472 that specifies the technical requirements for regenerative, that is, repeated centrifugal action pumps for handling clear, cold water suitable for domestic water supply. The specifications and testing parameters defined for assessing the factors which can affect a pump’s performance as per IS 8472, include –Hydrostatic test, Self-Priming test, Temperature Rise test, Guarantee of Workmanship and Material, Guarantee of Performance, Tolerances and Verification Procedure.

As you can see, there’s a fair amount of aspects to take into consideration when choosing a water pump. Do your due diligence and you are sure to make a wise investment for the water supply at your home.
