BIS Sets Standard For Packaged Dry Mix Concrete

Concrete, as one of the most widely used building materials globally, plays a critical role in ensuring the safety, sustainability, and durability of built infrastructure. From houses to skyscrapers, bridges to dams, the quality of concrete directly impacts the performance and durability of structures. In order to address the evolving demand of modern construction and enhance the quality and convenience of concrete production, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has formulated IS 18685 Packaged Dry Mix Concrete – Specifications. This standard provides a comprehensive framework for the production, supply, and quality control of concrete. It outlines detailed specifications for the constituent materials, packaging, storage, testing and sampling. In the present fast-paced construction landscape, concrete making materials are increasingly traded between suppliers and purchasers in pre-packed form such as bags or drums. This shift has created the need for making standardized requirements to ensure that such packaged dry mix concrete shall meet the essential benchmarks for quality, efficiency, and sustainability.

What is Packaged Dry Mix Concrete?
Packaged dry mix concrete is a pre-mixed blend of all necessary concrete-making materials namely cement (or cement replacement materials), dried aggregates, and dry admixtures in powder form, packed together in a single bag. Users only need to add water on-site to produce ready-to-use concrete, simplifying the process for construction and repair activities.

What is the aim of guidelines specified under IS 18685?
This standard outlines comprehensive requirements for the production and supply of ready-mixed concrete in dry condition, ensuring its usability and quality for various applications.

Constituent Materials
The standard recommends the use of high-quality raw materials, including cement, aggregates, and admixtures so as to achieve optimal performance and desired quality of concrete.

Packing and Storage
Dry mix concrete must be packed securely in moisture-resistant bags to maintain its integrity and extend its shelf life. The standard provides guidelines for proper storage to prevent the bags from dampness and deterioration.

Sampling and Testing
To ensure compliance, the standard specifies quality control measures, including regular sampling and testing of materials for ensuring consistency, strength, and durability.

Environmental Considerations
The standard also highlights upon sustainable practices by minimizing material wastage and reducing the carbon footprint associated with on-site mixing.

It is essential to verify the quality of packaged dry mix concrete before purchasing, as not all suppliers may meet the standard requirements. Look for the ISI mark which ensures that you are purchasing quality and reliable packaged dry mix concrete for use.
