BIS Formulates New Standard IS 18841 For Cylinder Cartridge For Locks

In today’s rapidly evolving security landscape, the integrity of lock mechanisms is more critical than ever. Whether you’re securing a home, office, or public space, the quality and performance of locking systems can make all the difference. The Indian Standard – IS 18841:2024 for Cylinder Cartridge For Locks – Specification provides a comprehensive framework for cylinder cartridges used in a wide range of locks—from mortise locks to padlocks and rim locks. The standard outlines detailed specifications for the design, manufacturing, and performance criteria of cylinder cartridges.

Cylinder Cartridge For Locks – Specification

This standard introduces a clear classification system for cylinder cartridges, helping businesses select the right product for their specific use cases. The standard divides cartridges into three primary grades based on their intended application and expected lifespan:

Grade 1 (Light Duty): Designed for low-frequency use in residential settings or internal doors where the likelihood of misuse is minimal. Ideal for private homes or offices where security needs are moderate.

Grade 2 (Medium Duty): Suited for medium-frequency use, such as office doors or external apartment doors. This grade balances durability and cost-efficiency for commercial applications with some risk of misuse.

Grade 3 (Heavy Duty): Built for high-frequency use in public spaces or high-traffic areas, such as government buildings or public office doors, where durability and resistance to misuse are crucial.

This classification system ensures that the most appropriate product is selected based on the specific demands of the environment, ensuring both security and longevity.

Tests Undertaken as per the Indian Standard
Cylinder cartridges undergo a series of stringent performance tests designed to assess their security, durability, and overall reliability. These tests include an evaluation of the general functionality and integrity of the cylinder, ensuring that it operates smoothly and consistently under typical usage conditions.

The key strength test is crucial to verify that the locking mechanism can withstand repeated use without failure, ensuring long-term reliability.

A durability test is also conducted to confirm that the cartridge can endure years of continuous operation without compromising its performance.

The corrosion resistance test checks the cartridge’s ability to resist environmental stressors such as rust and wear, ensuring that it remains functional even in harsh conditions.

Lastly, the resistance to mechanical attacks test ensures that the cartridge can withstand tampering, forced entry, or other physical threats. Together, these tests guarantee that only the most secure, reliable, and durable cylinder cartridges.

Adherence to this standard ensures consistency and reliability, as it maintains uniform performance and durability across all products. By meeting the rigorous requirements for fire resistance, corrosion protection, and attack resistance, manufacturers can offer improved safety, providing locking systems that are more resilient against common threats like rust, wear, and tampering.
