Disinfectant Fluids – The modern approach to clean homes

Disinfectant fluids or liquids refer to antimicrobial cleaning products, which when applied to different surfaces of non-living objects, for instance, kitchen sinks, floors, and bathroom walls and so on, work to eliminate the harmful microorganisms residing there.

We live in a world where normal cleaning using soap and water is not enough for homes and the various surfaces in it. Researches have revealed that contaminated environments lead to transmission of microbes which further cause healthcare-associated infections. Germs are widespread and although not all of these cause chronic illnesses, there are some that actually do. Several regions within the house are ridden with microbes because they often get overlooked during cleaning.

From corporate firms, hospitals and medical centres to millions of households worldwide, the consumers of disinfectant liquids are everywhere. Increasing awareness regarding the importance of hygiene in households and work environments has made disinfectant liquids a preferred choice among cleaning products.

Do disinfectant fluids really work?

The thing about bacteria or germs is that they cannot be seen through naked human eyes. Not all germs show up as mould outgrowths. Disinfectant fluids are not only supposed to make the walls, floors, sinks (or whatever they are meant for) etc. spotless, but also germ-free.

But, how do you know whether or not that fancy disinfectant fluid that you bought last week is helpful or not?

Just like a variety of other products retailed in the market, even disinfectant liquids need to meet the requirements set by the Bureau of Indian Standards for efficacy of disinfectant fluids. To explain it better, the Indian Standard for Phenolic Type of disinfectant fluids has been mentioned below.

Indian Standard for disinfectant fluids of the phenolic type

IS 1061:2017 for disinfectant fluids of the phenolic type includes provision for investigating the germicidal properties of disinfectant liquids. Two classes of disinfectant fluids are classified in this standard – White and Black. Each of these classes of disinfectant shall be of six grades based on RW (Rideal Walker) and SA (Staphylococcal) co-efficient. It is through these grades that the disinfecting power (by killing of microorganisms) of disinfectant fluids is indicated.

How to choose the right disinfectant fluid for your house

With an expansive range of disinfectant fluids from a number of brands being sold in the market, choosing the right product for your house can seem like a confusing affair. However, purchasing the right kind of disinfectant fluid need not be all that difficult.

To begin with, consumers first need to understand that disinfectant fluids are of various types, each of which has a purpose of its own. Alcohols, aldehydes, Iodophors, Chlorine compounds, hydrogen peroxide as well as phenolic compounds are all disinfectants. Now, while hydrogen peroxide is recommended for usage in hospitals, phenols make for excellent disinfectants in some household disinfectants.

Here are certain factors that you can take into consideration when purchasing disinfectant fluids, to select the appropriate one: –

  • Effectiveness – You would obviously want to buy a product that works best depending on your need. Pathogens can have more than one strain, and disinfectants can have certification for specific strains.
  • Safety – Now, while some category of disinfectant leaves stains behind, there are others that may be toxic, which is why ensuring the safety aspect is important. You need to check that the disinfectant you mean to purchase does not corrode surfaces or skin, for that matter.
  • Ease of Use– Certain products are so made that they call for multiple steps for usage, which may not be feasible to all. So try searching out a disinfectant liquid that is easy to use.

The disinfectant fluid conforming to Indian standard ensures the effectiveness, safety and ease of use.
